Nepal Travel Update 2026: Flood, Safety, Trekking Routes & Travel Advice

Latest Nepal Travel Guide | Flood Update | Trekking Safety | Travel Advice | Explore Holiday Nepal

Nepal remains one of the world's most extraordinary destinations for mountain trekking, cultural travel, wildlife, adventure, and Himalayan experiences. However, 2026 has been an exceptionally difficult year for parts of Nepal because of severe floods and climate-related disasters.

If you are planning to visit Nepal in 2026, you may be asking:

  • Is Nepal safe to travel to now?
  • Is Nepal open for international travelers?
  • Which trekking routes are safe and accessible?
  • Did the floods affect Everest Base Camp, Manaslu, Annapurna or other trekking regions?
  • Should I cancel my Nepal trip?
  • How can I travel safely after the floods?
  • Is trekking possible in Nepal in autumn and winter 2026?

This page provides a practical travel update from Explore Holiday Nepal, based on current official information and conditions that travelers should consider before starting their journey.

Is Nepal Open for Travel in 2026?

Yes. Nepal continues to welcome international travelers.

The 2026 floods caused devastating damage in particular areas, especially around river valleys and infrastructure affected by the major August disaster. However, this does not mean that the entire country is closed or unsafe.

The Nepal Tourism Board continues to publish travel and safety updates, while the Department of Tourism continues normal tourism-related activities and expedition administration.

The important point for travelers is that conditions can vary significantly from one region to another.

Nepal is a geographically diverse country. A flood or landslide affecting one highway, river valley, or mountain district does not automatically mean that Kathmandu, Pokhara, Everest, Annapurna, Manaslu, Chitwan, or every other destination has the same conditions.

For this reason, travelers should check their specific route, rather than relying only on general news about Nepal.

2026 Nepal Flood Situation

Nepal experienced a devastating flood disaster in August 2026 following a glacier-related event near the Nepal-China border.

According to the latest government information reported on October 5, Nepal had recorded at least 1,455 deaths and 5,285 people missing following the August 26 disaster. More than 13,000 people were rescued, while roads, bridges, settlements, farms and hydropower infrastructure were severely damaged.

The disaster has caused enormous hardship for affected communities, and Nepal is now moving from the emergency search-and-rescue phase toward rehabilitation and reconstruction.

This situation should be taken seriously.

At the same time, it is important to understand that Nepal's tourism destinations are not all affected in the same way.

Travelers should obtain current information about their particular destination and transportation route before departure.

Is It Safe to Travel to Nepal After the Flood?

For many destinations, travel is possible, but responsible planning is more important than ever.

The biggest risks travelers should consider include:

1. Road and Highway Conditions

Some roads and bridges were damaged by floods and landslides. Conditions can change quickly after heavy rainfall.

If your itinerary involves long road journeys, your travel company should check the latest road conditions before departure.

2. Weather

Nepal's mountain weather can change rapidly.

Heavy rain can cause:

  • Landslides
  • Flash floods
  • Road closures
  • Trail damage
  • Delays
  • Flight disruptions

The Nepal Department of Hydrology and Meteorology provides current weather, flood and warning information.

3. Mountain Conditions

High-altitude trekking and climbing always involve natural risks, including snowfall, avalanches, rockfall, altitude sickness and rapidly changing weather.

A recent avalanche at Himlung Himal in Manang tragically killed 15 Nepali workers preparing a climbing camp, demonstrating why mountain conditions must always be monitored carefully.

This does not mean every trek is unsafe. It means that mountain travel should be managed by experienced professionals who understand local conditions.

Is Manaslu Trek Safe and Open in 2026?

The Manaslu region has particular importance for Explore Holiday Nepal, as our team has strong local experience in the region.

According to a Nepal Tourism Board situation update dated September 11, 2026, damaged structures on a section connecting Chumnubri Rural Municipality–4 and Namrung had been restored sufficiently for trekking, and the earlier restriction on that section was lifted. The Tourism Board stated that Manaslu was accessible while advising travelers to continue monitoring local conditions and follow safety precautions.

Therefore, travelers should not assume that the entire Manaslu Circuit is closed because of flood news.

However, conditions in the mountains can change.

Before every departure, we recommend checking:

  • Trail conditions
  • Road access
  • Weather forecasts
  • Bridge conditions
  • Local government notices
  • Accommodation availability
  • Altitude and weather conditions

At Explore Holiday Nepal, we monitor these factors and adjust itineraries when necessary.

What About Everest Base Camp Trek?

Everest Base Camp is one of Nepal's most popular trekking routes.

Travelers considering EBC should understand that the route is in a high Himalayan environment where weather, snowfall, flight conditions and trail conditions can change quickly.

Rather than deciding whether to travel based on flood news from another part of Nepal, travelers should obtain a current update specifically for:

Kathmandu → Lukla → Everest Region → Everest Base Camp

Our recommendation is to maintain flexibility in the itinerary and allow contingency time for possible flight or weather delays.

Annapurna Trekking in 2026

The Annapurna region remains another major trekking destination in Nepal.

Popular routes include:

  • Annapurna Circuit
  • Annapurna Base Camp
  • Poon Hill
  • Mardi Himal
  • Khopra Ridge
  • Tilicho Lake

However, road and trail conditions should be checked immediately before departure, particularly for routes involving road transportation through areas vulnerable to landslides.

Do not rely on an old trekking report from several months ago.

Mountain conditions can change rapidly.

Langtang, Kanchenjunga and Upper Mustang

Nepal has many trekking regions beyond Everest and Annapurna.

Depending on current conditions, travelers may consider:

  • Langtang Valley
  • Manaslu Circuit
  • Upper Mustang
  • Kanchenjunga
  • Annapurna
  • Everest
  • Poon Hill
  • Mardi Himal
  • Other regional trekking routes

Each destination has different geography and access conditions.

For remote areas such as Kanchenjunga and Upper Mustang, professional planning is particularly important because transportation, rescue access and communication can be more challenging.

Should You Cancel Your Nepal Trip Because of the Flood?

Not necessarily.

The correct question is not simply:

“Was there a flood in Nepal?”

The better questions are:

“Where am I traveling?”

“Is my route currently accessible?”

“What are the current weather conditions?”

“Are the roads, trails and accommodation operating?”

“Do I have a responsible local company monitoring the situation?”

If your planned destination and transportation route are operating safely, there may be no reason to automatically cancel your Nepal holiday.

However, if authorities advise against travel to a specific affected area, travelers should follow those recommendations.

How to Travel Safely in Nepal in 2026

We recommend the following safety practices.

Check Weather Before Every Trek

Do not begin a mountain journey without checking the latest forecast.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology provides official weather and flood information.

Use an Experienced Local Guide

A local guide can understand changes that may not appear in older online information.

Local teams can monitor:

  • Trail conditions
  • Local weather
  • Landslides
  • Road closures
  • Accommodation
  • Transportation
  • Altitude conditions

Keep Flexible Travel Days

Do not schedule your international flight immediately after a trekking flight.

Mountain weather can cause delays.

Buy Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for trekking in Nepal.

For higher-altitude adventures, check that your policy specifically covers trekking at the altitude of your planned journey and emergency evacuation where applicable.

Carry Essential Documents

Keep copies of:

  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Insurance documents
  • Emergency contacts
  • Trekking permits
  • Important medical information

Respect Local Instructions

If local authorities, guides or emergency officials recommend changing a route, delaying travel or avoiding an area, take that advice seriously.

Why Choose a Local Company After the 2026 Flood?

Following a major natural disaster, conditions can change faster than information published online.

This is one reason a locally based trekking company can be valuable.

At Explore Holiday Nepal, our team works directly with local guides, drivers, hotels and communities. We can monitor conditions and communicate changes to travelers before and during their journey.

Our Managing Director, Ishwor Bhandari, has worked as a trekking guide since 2009 and has extensive experience across Nepal's major trekking regions, including Manaslu, Annapurna, Everest, Langtang, Kanchenjunga and Upper Mustang.

Our approach is simple:

Safety first. Service second. The itinerary comes third.

If conditions require an itinerary to change, traveler safety should always be more important than completing a predetermined schedule.

Nepal Needs Responsible Travelers

The 2026 disaster has caused enormous losses for Nepalese families and communities.

Tourism provides employment for:

  • Guides
  • Porters
  • Drivers
  • Hotel workers
  • Restaurant staff
  • Local businesses
  • Trekking agencies
  • Mountain communities

Responsible tourism can therefore play an important role in supporting Nepal's recovery.

Travelers can help by choosing local businesses, respecting affected communities, avoiding damaged areas, following local safety instructions and traveling responsibly.

Nepal Travel Update: Our Message to Travelers

Nepal has faced a very difficult year.

The floods and other mountain disasters have caused real loss of life and significant infrastructure damage. Travelers should not ignore these risks.

But Nepal is much more than one disaster zone.

Many parts of the country continue to welcome travelers, and specific trekking regions have been assessed and reopened following repairs and local safety evaluations. The Manaslu region, for example, was officially reported accessible in September after restoration work on an affected section.

Our message is therefore:

Do not travel blindly.
Do not cancel blindly.
Check your destination.
Check your route.
Check the weather.
Travel with experienced local professionals.
